Kawau Bay
Contemporary architectural home
Residential build
This bespoke residential home in Kawau Bay is a contemporary architectural build set within a historically significant coastal hillside. Built by Brackenridge Builders, the home was carefully designed to respond to both the natural landscape and the archaeological features present on the site.
Positioned to follow the curve of the land, the home wraps around existing middens and kūmara pits, allowing the architecture to sit gently within its surroundings. A natural material palette has been used throughout, including macrocarpa beams and cladding milled directly from the surrounding farm, alongside copper flat seam and commercial aluminium roofing profiles. Internally, industrial surface-polished, oxide-tinted concrete floors and encaustic tiles create a grounded, textural finish that complements the coastal setting.
The complexity of building on a sensitive archaeological site required careful planning, coordination and a high level of craftsmanship. Close collaboration across the project team ensured the home respected the land while delivering a well-resolved architectural outcome.
This project reflects Brackenridge Builders’ experience delivering high-end homes across Kawau Bay and the wider coastal region.
“Building a home can be right up there in the high stress stakes. Our build with Brackenridge Builders was anxiety free - in fact we really enjoyed it. Due to Brackenridge’s professional, conscientious approach to the building process, great communication skills and creative problem solving we sailed through a fairly complicated project. Tony Borich, his team and carefully selected contractors were a delight to work with - old school experience combined with a can-do attitude. Each stage of the build was communicated in advance which meant no surprises.
We have no hesitation in recommending Brackenridge Builders - in fact we have already numerous times.”
